  • We also looked at how business letters are written

IF YOU MISSED CLASS
  • Do today's warmup (there are three parts)--see the slideshow at the top of the page
  • Review formal vs. informal writing:
    • Formal:
      • Proper punctuation
      • Bigger words
      • Polite language (eg, requests instead of demands)
      • Less personal
      • Longer sentences
      • No contractions (contractions=don't, can't, won't, it's, etc.)
      • No slang
    • Informal:
      • Proper punctuation isn't as important
      • Any words are generally fine, including slang
      • Not always polite
      • Often written with shorter sentences or sentence fragments
      • Contractions are fine
      • Personal language is fine--you can talk about yourself, your feelings about something, etc.
  • The following slideshow has four exercises for you to do
    • The first three have you write something informal and something formal
    • The last exercise talks about the conventions of a business letter
